He lay on the ground beneath a bench in the garden, breathing in the heavy scent of dirt after the rain. With the current state of affairs at the school, there was little else to do.
He'd been waiting for a dragon since he'd first received the letter, but the hatching was still many weeks away. For all intents and purposes, this life he'd been so honored to be offered was worse than his previous existence. Trapped in the air on this floating island, waiting for his ride to the mainland to hatch, he felt like a prisoner. Valen thrived on freedom, on solitude and self-dependency, and this school was quickly becoming a hell.
He closed his eyes and sighed softly. Even now he could picture it, a massive creature roaring up through the clouds, swooping in to save him from this boredom. What he wouldn't give for a way out.
